An Educare Family Story: Trina and James
Like most parents, Trina Wade-McGee wants the best for her children. But raising a family in a low-income community often meant that getting the best was a challenge. Five years ago, she enrolled her then three-month-old son, James, in Educare, believing that the Ounce of Prevention Fund’s innovative early learning program was the best way to prepare him for school. Little did she know how much Educare would change his life—and hers.
"Educare not only takes care of the child, but also supports the family," Trina says. "I don’t see how you can succeed when you are struggling without having support from others."
Trina quickly learned that families are at the heart of Educare and that the program helps parents develop in their role as their children’s first, and best, teachers. Educare empowered Trina to pursue a path toward success, no matter what challenges she and her family may face. "Educare taught me to be a strong advocate for my family and myself," she says.
Today, James is a thriving kindergartner and Trina has channeled the confidence she gained at Educare into a career in social work, where she is able to help other families in need. She is also supporting the Ounce as a donor. "I wanted to give back to something meaningful," she says.
With your help, the Ounce can provide and advocate for Educare and other high-quality early learning programs that are changing the lives of countless children and families like Trina and James every day. Learn how you can support the Ounce.
