Educare children help break world record
Educare of Chicago Participates in Jumpstart's Read for the Record on Oct. 8October 8, 2009
The preschoolers at Educare of Chicago surrounded their teacher, patiently sitting cross-legged in the reading corner of their classroom. As the teacher read A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, the children eagerly read along with her, joining 2 million children around the world to break a world record.
Seventy-two preschoolers at Educare participated in the Oct. 8 Read for the Record, a global effort to break the record for the number of people reading the same book on the same day. The event was sponsored by Jumpstart, a national early childhood organization, to raise awareness of early childhood literacy in low-income communities.
Educare of Chicago, the Ounce of Prevention Fund's birth-to-five school on the South Side, has become a national model for narrowing the academic achievement gap for low-income children. Educare will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in 2010.
