Second Educare opens in Omaha

October 1, 2009

A ribbon cutting ceremony took place today for the new Educare of Omaha at Indian Hill, with Nebraska First Lady Sally Ganem participating. This is the second Educare in Omaha and the eighth operating school in the country. The facility will serve 191 children from birth to five who are at-risk for school failure.

"We're trying to reach those kids in the first five years of life to prevent the achievement gap that often appears at kindergarten by really eliminating the opportunity gap in the first five years," said Jessie Rasmussen, vice president of the Buffett Early Childhood Fund, in the Omaha World Herald. "If we can give these kids the opportunity to be in really effective early childhood programs for two or more years, our data tells us that we can get these kids to arrive at school on par with most of their peers."

Twelve additional Educare schools are in development, ensuring that the movement the Ounce started with a school on Chicago's South Side continues to grow and gain influence in the field. Learn more about Educare.
