Tenth Educare school opens in Seattle
On March 27, the Ounce of Prevention Fund and the Buffett Early Childhood Fund partnership celebrated the grand opening of the Educare Learning Center of Seattle, the country's 10th Educare.
A crowd of 300 local and state politicians, philanthropists, community leaders, and early childhood professionals attended the opening. William Gates, Sr., co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, accompanied guests on a tour of the facility that he and hundreds of other contributors helped to build.
"It's a beautiful model," Gates said. "The work is very advanced and professional. It's a great thing for our state."
One highlight of the event came when Beatrice Harper, an Educare of Seattle parent, gave a moving testimony about the positive impact the learning center has already had on her son.
The two-story facility serves 135 at-risk children, ages birth to five, and houses a family resource library, an art studio between every two classrooms, and observation rooms for each classroom for parents and visiting teachers.
Additional Educare schools are slated to open in Kansas City and Maine this year. A groundbreaking on a new Educare will also take place in Washington, D.C. For more information on the Educare movement, visit educareschools.org.
