Southside Preschool Joins Reading Campaign to Break World Record

Educare of Chicago Participates in Jumpstart's Read for the Record on Oct. 8
October 5, 2009

What
Preschoolers at Educare of Chicago will participate in Read for the Record on Oct. 8, a global effort to break the record for the number of people reading the same book on the same day. The fourth annual Read for the Record is sponsored by Jumpstart, a national early childhood organization.

About 85 preschoolers and their teachers will read A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Each child will also receive a copy of the book to keep.

Educare of Chicago, the Ounce of Prevention Fund's birth-to-five school on the South Side, has become a national model for narrowing the academic achievement gap for low-income children. Educare will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in 2010.

"Read for the Record is a great way to reinforce language skills, which are essential to later success in school," said Diana Rauner, Executive Director of the Ounce of Prevention Fund. "Unfortunately, most low-income children do not have an opportunity to develop early literacy skills. At Educare, we use research-based strategies to improve the language and literacy skills of at-risk children so that they enter kindergarten ready to learn and succeed."
