Dr. Alison Gopnik to discuss importance of early childhood development at Ounce of Prevention Fund Luncheon

What
Alison Gopnik, professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, will speak April 30 at the Ounce of Prevention Fund's Annual Luncheon, "It's Good Business to Invest in Young Children."

More than 500 Chicago business and community leaders will gather to hear Dr. Gopnik discuss how babies and toddlers learn – offering insight into how children's cognitive development should guide education policy and funding decisions on the state and national level.

An internationally recognized leader in the study of children's learning and development, Dr. Gopnik was one of the founders of the study of "theory of mind," illuminating how children come to understand the minds of others. She is the author of more than 100 articles and several books, including The Scientist in the Crib and her latest, The Philosophical Baby.

The event chair is Harrison I. Steans, chairman of the Executive Committee of Financial Investments Corporation and President and CEO of the Steans Family Foundation.

The Ounce of Prevention Fund works to ensure that all children, particularly those in poverty, have quality early childhood experiences from birth to age five. Educare of Chicago, the Ounce's state-of-the-art school on the South Side, has become a national model of high-quality early childhood education.
